How to write a winning Master's thesis

Hinweise für Studierende

International Master's students from the Department of History and Cultural Studies who are starting their Master's thesis and ideally already have an idea for a topic. The course is held in English and is interdisciplinary.

The workload of the course equals 150 hours: attendance 30 hours, preparation and wrap-up 120 hours. For questions regarding credits you will have to approach your MA advisor of your study program.

The four seminar days are aimed at Master's students who want to learn strategies for writing their Master's thesis and already have an idea for a topic. The following questions will be answered in the centres: (1) How do I develop a compelling concept for my Master's thesis that allows an optimal focussing of the project and thus the text to be written? How do I write a suitable exposé? (2) How do I develop and write a well-structured theoretical section (state of research) and a corresponding theoretical framework? (3) How do I create a feasible research design? How do I structure and write a suitable analytical / results section? (4) How do I present the results of my Master's thesis in clear and understandable language? How can I revise my text efficiently?

All participants work on their specific project in order to be able to implement the input directly. Please bring an internet-enabled laptop and your topic ideas to the seminar.

Registered participants will receive an invitation with tasks to be completed in preparation for the seminar: 1. Task on selecting a topic, worksheet "Concept of my Master's thesis" 2. Tasks on setting up various work/writing tools: formatting templates, reference management software, research tools, collaboration tools.

A processing phase of the tasks during the workshop is followed by a feedback phase (in tandem, in the group or by the trainer to individual participants).

About the trainer: Dr. Beate Richter is the founder of the Wissenschaftliche Schreibwerkstatt Berlin, where she has been offering a broad program of writing workshops, coaching, and editing services for scientists and students across disciplines since 2003. After studying physics, philosophy, and literature, she earned her doctorate in the philosophy of education and has been teaching in the areas of philosophy of science and applied ethics ever since.
