Structures of division: political polarization in different contexts
Yangliu Fan
Kommentar
In the digital age, online platforms change who we interact with, who speaks out, and the kind of information people engage with, which can potentially lead to polarizing processes visible in online communication networks. This course focuses on the concept of political polarization—its related concepts, various forms, and its causes and outcomes—across different societies and contexts. Focusing on the critical analysis of empirical work, the course actively engages students with current literature and debates surrounding political polarization as a pressing phenomenon of the current age.
To empirically identify how online communication networks form and evolve, the course offers an introduction to network analysis techniques (including fundamental concepts and measures). Moreover, they will learn to visualize and interpret network data using software tools like Gephi and develop practical skills such as community detection in networks. Additionally, students will gain hands-on experience analyzing social media communication networks and be equipped with the methodological expertise to conduct their network analysis projects. As a key component of the seminar, students will collaborate on a group project examining the division structures of the German Twittersphere. This allows them to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting.
