Believing and Knowing

Richard Woodward

Kommentar

The course examines the contemporary philosophical literature about belief and knowledge, with a particular emphasis on the ways in which it has recently been suggested that traditional ideas about both should be amended. Questions that may be encounter include: What is the relationship between thinking that something is the case and believing that it is the case? What is the relationship between knowing that something is the case and being sure that it is the case? How should we understand the beliefs of someone who knows that air travel is safe but can’t help thinking that they are in danger when they on a plane? In what ways are a subject’s beliefs sensitive to the kinds of questions they ask? In what ways might knowledge and belief depend on whether the moral or practical stakes are high? In what ways does inquiry shape what we ought to believe? Schließen
