V - Modeling of plate tectonics and magmatism

Kommentar

Objectives: Students have an in-depth knowledge of the application of numerical methods in two-dimensional geodynamic modeling including the modeling of compressibility, plastic yielding and initiation of plate tectonics, as well as partial melting and volcanic outgassing from the mantle of rocky bodies, at the example of Earth and other planets in the solar system. They are able to work independently and to derive and explain numerical models to study these different geophysical processes over time. 

Contents: Students will work with two-dimensional convection models in different geometries (spherical annulus, cylindrical shell and Cartesian box) commonly applied in geodynamic models and will work with both Cartesian and polar coordinates. They will learn how to apply the finite differences, finite volume, and finite element methods to model computational fluid dynamics. They will learn how experimental or theoretical knowledge of rock properties can be integrated into numerical models and will learn to test computational models against the geological record. They will derive basic models of plate tectonics as well as partial melting and volcanic outgassing. Students will learn to apply their knowledge to differnt planetary bodies.
