How should positions and offices in the political sphere be filled? According to liberal ideas, in the economic sphere, by desert or merit; in the political sphere, however, democratically through free and equal elections. The ‘true spirit’ of equality, said Montesquieu, consists of commanding and being under the command of one’s equals – a state of reciprocity, realizable only through the attentive regulation of democracy. Democracy should be governed by the basic democratic principle of one person, one vote. This ideal of political equality is opposed by Confucian critiques of democracy (e.g., by Daniel Bell and Tongdong Bai). The seminar will first clarify the foundations of this debate. According to the liberal view, how should political power really be distributed, and how should political offices be filled? How does this relate to merit, performance, and the selection of the best? In the second part of the seminar, we will discuss among other proposals Tongdong Bai‘s arguments in ”Against Political Equality: The Confucian Case” with the author himself, who will co-teach the seminar. In his book, he proposes a Confucian hybrid regime that transcends the theoretical divide between Confucianism and liberal democracy while also transcending the cultural divide between East and West.
