Rock Art of Eurasia - Prehistoric Lifeworlds and Symbols (S)

Henny Piezonka Sabine Reinhold

Kommentar

Rock art is one of the few archaeological sources in which prehistoric communities created narratives that directly refer to their everyday life, cosmologies and mythological beliefs. Beginning with the animal images of the Palaeolithic through to the Middle Ages and into our time, rock art can be found worldwide and in almost all ecozones. New finds from Borneo, for example, date back up to 50,000 years, and in the Kimberley region of Australia, communities continue a living rock art tradition today. This course will discuss the rock art of the Eurasian continent and its cultural context. In Europe, the best-known centres for rock art are Scandinavia and Karelia, the Iberian Peninsula and the Alpine region. Further east, rock art is found in the Caucasus, in the mountains of Central Asia, in the Altai, the Russian Far East and on the Korean Pacific coast. Rock art can also be found in the far north of Siberia, in Chukotka and in Yakutia. What topics are addressed in these rock images? To what extent do they illustrate a way of life that is also reflected in other archaeological sources? How many and what other sources are available that provide information about life at a particular time when rock art was created? Can rock art only be imagined in a ‘religious’ context? What conclusions can be drawn from rock paintings about the cognitive abilities of the artists? Are there trans-regional similarities or are the images specific to a particular time and place? In which landscapes do we find such images? These and other questions will be discussed in an introductory theoretical section and then elaborated through student contributions on regional studies.
