As a course complementary to the seminar on Gender and Politics in Japan, this tutorial aims to build the expertise and practical skills needed to understand and research diverse topics related to gender issues in Japan. The tutorial has a dual purpose. First, using a variety of recent materials, it will extend the content of the seminar by exploring selected topics in greater depth and by tracking contemporary developments in this field. Primary and secondary sources of different types will be employed to this end, including academic papers, government reports, newspaper articles, statistical data, and opinion polls. Second, the tutorial will hone the techniques for working effectively with these materials and using them in one’s own research. It will cover a range of subjects, such as academic writing, critical evaluation of texts, content analysis, data handling and visualisation, in order to equip the students with a set of tools that will help them to explore the topics of their interest more closely in their independent work.
