Language, gender, and sexuality

In this seminar, you will learn about the relationship between language, gender, and sexuality. We will explore the field in two sections:
1. Talking and thinking gender and sexuality – You will learn how gender and sexuality categories are represented in and shaped by language, for example in person reference (role names, proper names, pronouns), by labeling adjectives (male, female, masculine, feminine, trans, non-binary, genderfluid, queer, gay, lesbian etc.), in collocations and patterns, but also via syntactic structures.
2. Talking like a woman and do I sound gay? – You will learn about the relationship between language variation and social groups, with a focus on styles and the connection between language and identity.
In each of the sections, you will first get an overview of important theoretical concepts and methodological approaches, we will then discuss example studies, and end with a brainstorming session on your own projects.
Regular and active participation in this class includes working on a small case study and presenting the project design in a brief elevator pitch at the end of the semester. The exam consists of a term paper (4000-5000 words) about your case study.
The class will be taught in English.
