How do we define the boundaries of what is labeled as “violence,” and how has our characterization of it changed over time? What are the effects of violence on victims, perpetrators, and witnesses? How does violence shape a society that permits it, or is even governed by it? And, what means has literature found to engage this topic? These are some of the central questions we will explore in this seminar. To this end, we will read a number of key theoretical texts across a range of disciplines, by thinkers such as Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault, Elaine Scarry, Susan Sontag, and Walter Benjamin, amongst others. We will combine these readings with literary texts thematizing depictions of the many facets of violence, including war, piracy, domestic abuse, and racialized and gendered violence. Schließen
