Seminar
Interview Research in East Asian Studies
X. Alvin Yang
Kommentar
This seminar introduces students to qualitative interview research while integrating insights from network perspectives in East Asian Studies. Interviews are a key methodological tool in social science research, enabling scholars to explore personal experiences, institutional dynamics, and political or social change. At the same time, many of these processes are embedded in social networks – whether professional, political, or informal – and understanding these relational structures can enhance interview-based research.
In the first part of the course, students will learn the fundamentals of qualitative interviews, including research design, question formulation, ethical considerations, interview techniques, transcription, and coding. The second part of the course introduces network thinking in qualitative research, showing how interview data can be used to analyze social ties, power structures, and group dynamics. Instead of learning full-scale social network analysis (SNA), students will explore how networks emerge in interview data and how they can be mapped and analyzed qualitatively.
Through a combination of theoretical discussions, case studies, and hands-on exercises, students will gain the skills to design, conduct, and analyze qualitative interviews while also learning to recognize and interpret network structures within their research. The course will culminate in a final project where students apply these methods to a specific research question in East Asian Studies.
