Sociology of Insurance
Sebastian Kohl
Kommentar
Despite a few calls from classics like Tönnies or Luhmann for a sociology of insurance, it has never fully developed when compared to the sociology of banks or public welfare. This is surprising given the size of the private insurance sector in modern economies and its many links to social institutions such as the family, property or general welfare. This seminar offers both a historical introduction into the rise of modern insurance as a social phenomenon and into ways of thinking about insurance sociologically. Themes covered in the seminar include: religion and insurance, race and insurance, public welfare and private insurance, climate change and insurance. Methodologically, the seminar often follows a historical-comparative approach. Schließen
