Media Trust in Germany: Comparison across different social milieus
Anna Litvinenko
Kommentar
Everyone uses media, and everyone has ideas, perceptions, and opinions about how media function, and which media can be trusted and why. This course will explore these aspects. Through semi-structured interviews, we will focus on how people in Germany navigate high-choice information environment and assign trust to news sources. We aim to compare the results across different social milieus (life worlds). For this reason, we are conducting this study not only in Berlin but also in collaboration with students in Munich (LMU; course led by Florian Primig) and Rostock (University of Rostock; course led by Ana-Nzinga Weiß). We will adapt a shared interview guide, practice interview techniques, and eventually enter the field to conduct interviews. The interviews will be analyzed as part of students’ final research papers.
Learning Objectives at a Glance:
• Students will learn about concepts of media trust and folk theories and understand how to apply them in a research context.
• Students will gain knowledge of qualitative social research interview techniques and will be able to conduct interviews independently.
• Students will acquire introductory skills in analyzing semi-structured guideline interviews using "Thematic Analysis" (Braun & Clarke).
• Students will develop basic skills in computer-assisted text analysis using MAXQDA.
• A networking meeting for the teams from Munich, Berlin, and Rostock is planned to take place in Berlin.
