Philanthrobusiness - Humanitarianism, Activism, and the Savior Gaze in the Time of Communicative Capitalism
Jürgen Schaflechner
Kommentar
There exists an inherent ambiguity in the aid system, particularly on a global scale, where delineating a distinct boundary between ethics and power proves challenging (Barnett, 2018; Slim, 2015; Mahmood, 2012). While the history of humanitarianism extends back to the late 18th century and is intertwined with the mobilization against slavery in France and Britain (Calhoun, 2008), the colonial project has often operated under the guise of civilizing and aid interventions. This perspective has prompted some to propose conceiving of humanitarianism as a practice of governance and “an echo of colonial mechanisms” (Ivanovic, 2019, p. 84).
In this seminar, we will look at the mediatization of humanitarianism, philanthropy, and activism in the time of social media to understand how grievances of marginalized communities become visible today
