Eun-Jeung Lee

Kommentar

This course introduces students to the historical and cultural exchange between Korea and Europe, focusing on the role of German key figures in the cultural exchange between Korea and Europe, such as E. Oppert, H. von Möllendorff, W. Eckardt, and M. Meyer. They were also active as collectors of Korean artifacts, contributing to the accumulation of Korean cultural heritage in German museums. Additionally, the course will address the concept of changing value systems reflected in museum collections, as well as issues of cultural ownership. In a practical part, students will have to opportunity to work directly with museum collections, using the knowledge they gained to research objects and understand their history. Students will have the opportunity to develop their skills in research-based learning within a museum context by investigating historical sources and collection objects, while also being encouraged to critically reflect on value systems in the context of collections, especially regarding the ethical challenges surrounding cultural heritage.
