Course Description:
Since 2020, the European Union has been pursuing a plan to regulate the digital single market. With its numerous individual laws, the EU not only wants to facilitate trade in the digital sector, but also to ensure that the fundamental rights of EU citizens are protected in digital contexts. As a result, a separate European digitization law has developed. In this course, we will discuss the structures of this new field of law and apply the central laws of the EU's "digital package" to selected cases.Among other things, the course will cover the following aspects:
- Algorithms and artificial intelligence as a regulatory challenge
- Protection of fundamental rights in digital contexts
- The EU's competences for digitization law
- The regulation of artificial intelligence by the AI Act
- Digital platforms as a regulatory challenge
- The Digital Services Act (DSA)
- European data law: data protection law (GDPR) and new laws on personal and non-personal data (Data Act, Data Governcance Act)
- European media law; European Media Freedom Act (EMFA)
- Rules against the manipulation of electoral processes and for political advertising, combating disinformation
