The legacy of GULAG
Anna Abalkina
Kommentar
Political repressions have profound and lasting economic, political, and social consequences for society. In this course, we will examine the history of the Soviet GULAG system and its enduring legacy. We will explore key questions such as:
-Did the GULAG and political repressions influence political preferences in post-Soviet countries? If so, through what mechanisms?
-What were the social consequences of political repressions, and how long can intergenerational trauma be traced?
- What are economic legacies of GULAG?
- How did deportations affect host regions, and what were the channels of their impact?
- How does the prison system function as a tool of repression in modern Russia?
Special emphasis will be placed on the memory of the GULAG in contemporary post-Soviet societies and how it compares to the remembrance of political violence in other countries. The course will be conducted in English. Schließen
