This seminar examines the causes and consequences of political protest in Western democracies. In recent years, protest has played a dual role in established democracies: either as a threat to democratic institutions (e.g., the January 6 attack on the United States Capitol) or as a bulwark against authoritarianism (e.g., protests against the extreme right in Germany). We will explore this tension from different perspectives. In the first part of the seminar, we will familiarize ourselves with key texts in the fields of social movements and political participation. We will discuss various theoretical approaches that relate protest to democratic institutions and examine different methods for collecting protest data. In the following weeks, we will move on to specific topics such as shifting cleavages, radicalization, protest tactics and public support, and the impact of protest on agenda-setting. At the end of the semester, we will apply the theoretical and methodological tools acquired in the previous weeks to analyze protests that took place before or after recent national elections.
