Mobilizing in "the Middle East"

When talking about mobilization in the so-called Middle East, the uprisings of 2011 immediately come to mind. While these revolutionary movements which encompassed the geography of South West Asia and North Africa (SWANA) had a crucial impact on the political trajectories of the region, they are not the only form of mobilization that should be researched. On the contrary, the political and social movements in SWANA are as manyfold as the region itself: from the Algerian freedom fighters, to the labor movements in Egypt and Tunisia, and the Kurdish Women’s movement there is much to understand and analyze in the field of social movement studies that goes beyond the revolutions of the “Arab Spring”. The aim of the seminar is for students to get acquainted with the concepts used in the study of contentious politics, social movements and revolutions and then study a variety of empirical cases. These will consist of the examples mentioned before, as well as movements centering human and minority rights, gender and sexuality, labor rights and different political ideologies. The Arab Spring of 2011 and the more recent uprisings in Sudan, Lebanon, Iraq and Algeria will be covered too. Furthermore, time will be dedicated to reflect on the term “Middle East” and situate it politically and academically in its historical and colonial context. Schließen
