Kommentar
In this history of Jewish political thought, Moses Maimonides (1138-1204) and Spinoza (1632-1677) represent a kind of antipodes. Maimonides can be seen as a representative of medieval political thought in the Islamicate world, Spinoza is seen as a pioneer of modern political thought in Europe. Nevertheless, both thinkers reveal many similarities. Our comparative reading of selected texts from both thinkers will be guided by the works of modern philosophers and researchers on Jewish philosophy such as Hermann Cohen, Julius Guttmann, Leo Strauss, Harry Austryn Wolfson and Shlomo Pines. The seminar is intended to provide knowledge of the political thought of two of the most important Jewish philosophers, as well as insights into important research approaches on this topic in Jewish Studies.
