WiSe 24/25: Collaborative filmmaking between anthropology and activism
Dominik Mattes
Kommentar
This seminar will engage students in audiovisual and multimodal anthropology at the intersection of scholarly work and activism. In the first part of the course, participants are introduced to the basics of audiovisual/multimodal as well as public and engaged anthropology. The theoretical insights gained during these introductory sessions will then be translated into practice in the form of individual or collective engagements in collaborative media productions. Participants will produce a short documentary film (or another multimodal format of representation) in collaboration with members of activist networks in Berlin such as the Oyoun Collective, Tubman Network or Berlin Postkolonial (students may draw on their personal connections with activist initiatives as well) that focus on a theme to be identified together with the respective collaborators and protagonists. As for the technical aspects of filmmaking, students will learn to use semi-professional camera equipment and editing software under the supervision of Thomas John, a professional lecturer of audiovisual anthropology at Universität Münster. The seminar will culminate in a public screening of the students' projects at the end of the semester. Furthermore, the projects may have a public afterlife, for instance when the resulting films become part of student film festivals or film panels of anthropological conferences. Schließen
