This seminar explores how facial expressions and eye gaze act as essential non-verbal cues in emotional recognition and social interaction. It examines how these signals influence emotional processing, behavioural responses, and interpersonal communication. Students will learn about the psychophysiological mechanisms behind face and gaze processing, including part-based and holistic methods for recognizing emotions. Key topics include emotion-specific eye movement patterns, fixation behaviours, and the role of diagnostic facial features in identifying basic emotions such as happiness, sadness, and anger.
Students will engage in hands-on eye-tracking experiments and analyze pre-recorded data (Yang et al., 2021). They will also conduct basic behavioural and fixation analyses using R or Excel, gaining practical experience interpreting data and understanding emotional recognition patterns. Through lectures, group discussions, and collaborative projects, students will critically evaluate contemporary research on facial expressions and gaze. They will assess the replicability of debated findings and engage with theories about how these non-verbal cues support social and emotional functioning. By the course’s conclusion, students will develop skills in data analysis, refresh their statistical understanding, and critical thinking, culminating in group presentations and research analysis. These experiences prepare students for further research and practical applications in social and cognitive psychology.
