WiSe 24/25: Identifying into Racial Capitalism: Whiteness and Masculinity in the US and beyond

How do individual and collective social agents find and claim their place within large, abstract structures such as racial capitalism? This class will attempt to answer this question by investigating processes of identification within two relational structures of power and domination: whiteness and masculinity. We will start by thinking about how whiteness and masculinity can be conceptualized as large-scale structures, and about how we can understand identity and identification beyond an individual, personal level. We will also challenge the methodological nationalism of most studies of racialization and racism by critically discussing whiteness as a US-centered category, interrogating its applicability beyond the North American context, and always keeping in mind its gendered dimensions. Throughout the rest of the semester, we will engage with and analyze theories of racialization and gender as co-constitutive structures within capitalism. We will explore the workings of whiteness and masculinity within different contexts and assess how using them as analytical categories can illuminate (or perhaps obscure) aspects of social processes and relations. Concepts such as property, class, the nation, reproduction, or migration will be problematized through this lens, and students will gain the conceptual tools to formulate their own inquiries and to critically understand the deployment of theoretical frameworks in sociological and transdisciplinary literatures.
