WiSe 24/25: PS-History of English II: Migration and the History of English

Throughout history, varieties of English have been shaped by migration movements - from the "beginning" of English after the Germanic settlement of England in the 5th century over the various waves of colonization to English in a globalized world. In this class, we will look at different aspects of language contact, change and variation in the context of migration throughout the history of English. After introducing core concepts as well as data sources and methods, we will look at different migration situations, including occupation and invasion, and related linguistic developments chronologically: 1. The medieval period 2. First wave of colonization 3. Second wave of colonization 4. Globalization. Each topic will consist of an overview session and another session, in which you have a detailed look at example studies. These studies should serve as inspiration for your own empirical research project, which you will work on in the final sessions of the seminar, and which will form the basis for your term paper.
