WiSe 24/25: Shakespeare’s Political Tragedies
Michael Auer
Kommentar
In this class, we will discuss a selection of Shakespeare’s tragedies on political subjects: Richard II, Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, and Coriolanus. This will allow us to understand both the dramatic form and the political gist of his plays. We will engage in close readings of the individual texts to understand how they are built and will contextualize our readings in early Modern English discourse, politics, and society. Class discussion will be in English but students are more than welcome to participate in German if they are more comfortable in that language.
