WiSe 24/25: Crisis and New Beginnings: Concepts of the Political in Contemporary Philosophy

This course offers an introductory yet selective survey of contemporary continental thought, focusing on the question of the crisis and the need to establish new political beginnings. We will read and discuss works by Carl Schmitt, Martin Heidegger, Leo Strauss, Hannah Arendt, Claude Lefort, Ernesto Laclau, Chantal Mouffe, Wendy Brown, and Judith Butler. Throughout the course, we will interrogate political re-foundation by drawing on concrete events that the aforementioned authors have taken into account: revolutionary experiences, the advent of totalitarianism, the crisis of liberal democracy and humanism, the emergence of social movements linked to environmentalism and minority rights, as well as the unfolding of the new feminist wave. We will also examine our current situation, in which the emergence of new political conflicts shows how relevant the topics of the crisis and the new beginnings are. Our methodology will be simultaneously historical, textual, and conceptual, conceiving political theory as a distinct form of political investigation. Schließen
