Sculptures in Public Urban Contexts of Ancient Cities

Kommentar

Public spaces and buildings of ancient cities were often decorated with sculptures. The aim of this seminar is to examine the spatial contexts and functions of sculptures in different settings, such as public squares (agora, forum, porticus complexes), political and administrative buildings (bouleuterion, prytaneion ekklesiasterion, comitium, curia, basilica, etc.), buildings for spectacles and games (theater, amphitheater, odeia, stadia, circus), buildings for sports and personal hygiene (gymnasia, baths, latrines), commercial buildings (markets, macella, horrea, etc.) and other buildings and monuments (nymphaea, heroa, honorary monuments, etc.). Sanctuaries, domestic buildings, and funerary contexts will, however, be excluded. Central questions are how the sites, functions and themes of ancient sculpture developed in their socio-political and cultural-historical context; which sites in ancient cities were preferred for the display of sculpture; whether programs and themes differed significantly depending on the site of display; and who were the relevant agents and actors in the process of staging sculpture. Particular attention is paid to new finds and discourses in research (methodological approaches, theoretical debates, thematic focuses). The chronological and geographical focus will be determined together with the participants of the seminar. Good, easily accessible evidence is available for Greek and Roman cities from c. the 5th century BC to the 3rd/4th century AD. Depending on your interests, comparisons with evidence from other ancient cultures would also be possible. The seminar will be held in English (presentations and discussions), but the required research papers can be written in English or German. The seminar is open to advanced BA students and MA students.
