WiSe 23/24: HS-Negotiating Gender: Intersections: Temporality and Globality in Queer Perspective

In this seminar, we will define notions of queer temporality and globality in order to engage with literary forms of queer planetariness, post/coloniality, and historicity. We will discuss Jeanette Winterson’s postmodern novel The Stone Gods (2007), which merges the idea of queer love relationships with such themes as climate change, deep time, and planetary survival. We will then move on to texts that situate queer lives in relation to specific regions and locations: Bernardine Evaristo's novel Mr Loverman (2013) for the British-Caribbean context, poetry by Mauritian poet Kama La Mackerel and Jamaican Kei Miller, and Ocean Vuong‘s On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (2019), which merges a transgenerational perspective on the American war in Vietnam with a coming-out story and a conjoint focus on immigration and class. As such, our focus will be on texts that open up intersectional perspectives on 2SLGBTQIA+ lives, and that situate queer as a force that unfolds transtemporal as well as transregional, occasionally explicitly trans-oceanic, webs of relationality.
