Kommentar
Many rulers of Ancient West Asia made sure that texts were composed that reflected their view of the political history of their reign and often of the history of their predecessors as well. This resulted in a rich historiographical literature, of which the Neo-Assyrian royal inscriptions are the most notable examples. As everywhere, also in Ancient West Asia historiography took various forms, and different ways of narrating historical events developed there.
This course will take Neo-Assyrian royal inscriptions as starting-point and then move on to different periods and different areas. It will study various aspects of historiography and of dealing with history in general and in Ancient West Asia in particular and discuss the ways in which historiographical texts were transmitted in Ancient West Asia.
