Especially since the rise of film, performance practitioners have emphasised the co-presence of audiences and performers as a formative component of live art. The audience is ‘live’, the performer is ‘live’, the art/artist and the public are aware of each other’s presences – and this mutuality matters. But how? Or why? This introduction to performance analysis addresses liveness and mutual presence as ways of witness and digs into a history of radical propositions for witnessing of performance and performance of witnessing. We will take up the task of performance analysis as inflected across myriad witnessing practices and investigate how such practices might manage to be expressed in writing and research. We will think across cultural context and perspective, investigating how the witnessing of art events is woven into larger social and political concepts of witness – from courtroom to catastrophe.
