SoSe 23: At the Heart of it All? Discourses on the American Family in the 20th Century

Anne Overbeck

Kommentar

From Presidential campaigns to cereal commercials – family and family life is omnipresent in the public discourse in the US. Over large parts of the 20th centry however, this discourse was limited to the “nuclear family” (consisting of a mother, a father and a limited number of children) being the form against which all other family models were discussed. This prominent normative discourse on the “nuclear family” did not only influence personal life decisions but had important consequences on questions of politics and social justice. The seminar will take a look at how concepts of race, class and gender influenced the debate on the American family. Special emphasize will be put on questions of reproductive rights which spurred heated debates over the course of the 20th century. Schließen
