SoSe 23: Performativity, Transculturality and Narrative Modes of Korean Buddhist Painting

This seminar aims to offer a chronological overview of Korean Buddhist painting—from the introduction of Buddhism to the Korean peninsula during the Three Kingdoms Period to the first half of the 20th century. We will explore the theoretical literature on the notions of performativity, transculturality, and narrative modes within the context of East Asian Buddhism that will guide our navigation across the vast span of time. The theoretical introduction will be followed by specific case studies that will demonstrate how these ideas as methodological frameworks have enriched and been applied to the contemporary readings of Korean Buddhist painting.
