SoSe 23: Financial History of the US - Case Studies

This course will cover the financial history of the United States, from colonial to modern times. The class combines a 2-hour introductory module, followed by a 2-hour seminar session. Topics covered include, among others, money and finance in colonial times, the creation and liquidation of the First and Second Bank of the United States, the Free Banking Era, the post-Civil War “dual banking system”, bimetallism and the ``free silver'' movement, the major U.S. banking panics including the panic of 1907, the foundation of the Federal Reserve System, the Great Depression, the New Deal financial reforms, the emergence of the “Eurodollar market” and the “shadow banking system”, and the Financial Crisis of 2007-08. The lectures will sketch the evolution of the U.S. financial system and familiarize students with key concepts and terms used in the literature. The case study sessions will be centered around student presentations (all students are required to present a paper or book chapter). To obtain a grade for this course, students will have to write a final exam. Please register for the course 32710-S23.
