SoSe 23: China and the Global Economy

The course covers China’s changing role in global economic governance. It provides students with the theoretical and conceptual frameworks needed to discuss China’s economy and international politics, as well as an overview of major issues in this field. Readings in international relations and economic theory, as well as policy and academic analyses of China’s changing position in the global economy will allow students to unpack and critically reflect on topics ranging from economic globalization to the North-South divide in world politics. Regional case studies that elaborate China’s new economic relationships in East Asia, Africa and Latin America will be supplemented by thematic sessions stretching from international finance to agriculture and intellectual property. After every second session, students will be required to fill in online quizzes, the successful completion of which is a prerequisite for successful course participation. The quizzes are pass-fail and will be based on the previous two sessions’ readings and discussions. The course will be examined via an essay (Hausarbeit) to be submitted by the end of the semester.
