SoSe 23: Political polarization and radicalization

Conflict is an inherent part of democracy. Democracies live from the constructive exchange of ideas. But, sometimes, tensions between political groups can reach a point where they rip apart the social fabric of democratic systems. Episodes such as the attack on the US Capitol or, more recently, the attack on the Brazilian Congress show that hostility between political camps can threaten democratic institutions.
In this course, we will explore the closely related phenomena of political polarization and radicalization in the context of established democracies. While the concept of radicalization focuses on the political trajectory of a single individual or group, polarization reflects how multiple actors drift away from each other. Theoretically, the seminar bridges the literature on political protest and public opinion. We will look at different dimensions of radicalization and polarization (elite or mass; ideological, affective, or tactical). We will examine individual, group-level, and structural factors that foster radicalization and polarization. We will also discuss the consequences of these phenomena.
The seminar is structured around the discussion of influential texts and integrates practical activities with quantitative data. Over the course of the seminar, students have to submit reviews of the texts or prepare in-class presentations.
