Over the last century, women overtook men in terms of educational
performance and attainment: In many countries across the world, today’s
girls outperform boys in school and are more likely to obtain a tertiary
degree – a development that has prominently been described as “The Rise
of Women” or “The Boy Crisis.” Despite this female advantage in
education, women still fare worse on the labor market. In this seminar,
we will explore these seemingly contradictory patterns: What are
theoretical mechanisms behind gender inequality in school performance,
field of study/ occupational aspirations and choices, labor market
attainment, earnings, and career advancement? Why did some of these
inequalities persist while others changed, even reversed, over time? Are
these patterns universal or do we observe cross-country differences? How
does gender interact with further inequality dimensions, such as social
class? In the seminar, we will approach these questions by discussing
the most prominent theories on gender inequality in education and on the
labor market. This will be accompanied by in-depth discussions of
empirical (quantitative) studies on the topic, including questions and
exercises on how to match research questions with theoretical
foundations, modes of operationalization, and empirical analysis. Schließen
