The Economics of Housing

While housing is commonly considered a basic need that plays a central role in shaping economic opportunities, social cohesion, and individual well-being, housing affordability ranks among the most pressing policy concerns in many countries. This course offers an introduction to the economics of housing, helping students to gain a deeper understanding of the reasons for and potential solutions to this crisis. Through a combination of lectures, discussions, and student presentations, we will examine how housing markets are shaped by supply and demand, compare different models of housing systems, and evaluate the role of housing market regulation. We will also analyze broader implications for demographic trends, inequality, and social stability, while paying particular attention to adverse outcomes such as overcrowding and homelessness. The course concludes with a critical discussion of proposed policy solutions to the affordability challenge, weighing their potential benefits and drawbacks.
