'Afro-Modernism'

N.N.

Kommentar

Was modernism an invention of the West? In art history, artists like Monet, Gauguin, Picasso, and Duchamp have been celebrated as the avant-garde whose work changed the face of art history. Recently, the Euro-centric assumptions underlying this narration of modernism have come under scrutiny and art historians have taken on the challenge to de-centre and decolonize this narrative. The significance of the artists Amrita Sher-Gil, Abanindranath Tagore, Ernest Mancoba, Iba Ndiaye, Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo and Wifredo Lam in the making of modernism has recently been recognized. Today we speak of Afro-modernism, Black modernisms, global modernisms or trans-modernism. In this lecture series, we will look at the impact of African art on the making of European modernism and its consequences for Black modernism in the Harlem Renaissance. We also examine the African modernisms in independent African nations and the African Diaspora as they developed in conversations across three continents, contributing to a new understanding of modernism as a global phenomenon.
