New Cold War. State Models and Ressource Conflicts

The class discusses the debate over competing, increasingly state-driven socio-economic (state capitalist) development models, and the claim that a ‘new Cold War’ is dividing the West from Russia and China, with much of Eastern Europe, the Southern Caucasus, and Central Asia caught in a struggle between these power centers. The class discusses these development models and then zooms in through brief student projects (to be developed in class and than can be turned into term papers) on the competing energy, natural ressources and transport infrastructure initiatives developing from the Caspian to the Black Sea and their implications for ‘green transition’ and other developmental plans; how the European Union engages with Moldova, Ukraine, and the Southern Caucasian and Central Asian countries; the ‘weaponization’ of trade routes and energy infrastructure following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine; and Eastern European strategic infrastructural initiatives such as the Three Seas Initiatives. The goal of the class is to familiarize students with a grand and up-to-date debate (whether we are experiencing a “New” or “Second” Cold War) and encourage them to develop their own research interests, while providing them with the tools to conduct such research.
