Threats and Repressions in Authoritarian Regimes
Anna Abalkina
Kommentar
Authoritarian regimes rely on a spectrum of political violence, from subtle threats to massive repression, to maintain control. This course investigates the logic behind political repression in autocracies and examines its consequences for both society and regime durability. Particular attention will be paid to how repressive actions are legitimized by authoritarian rulers, and how repression interacts with strategies of co-optation.
We will explore key themes such as the role of repression in sustaining political order, the link between repression and protest dynamics, and the use of electoral and digital violence as tools of authoritarian survival. Through empirical research, theoretical frameworks, and regional case studies we will critically assess how modern autocracies adapt their repressive strategies in response to evolving political challenges.
Active participation: participate in discussion sessions and prepare questions for them. One individual presentation
