Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Authoritarianism
Alexander Libman
Kommentar
The concept of authoritarianism, which plays a preeminent role in political science, is in its essence an interdisciplinary one, with different fields (economics, philosophy, history, psychology and sociology) developing their own points of view on the topic. The goal of the seminar is to review the perspectives on authoritarianism, which have been developed in different scholarly fields, and to show how they differ from each other, but can also enrich and strengthen each other. We will combine theoretical discussion with more empirically oriented debates how different perspectives on authoritarianism are reflected in Eastern European studies and help understanding societies of the region (here, we pay our main attention to Russia, which in many disciplines is among the main cases of studying authoritarianism). We combine conceptual debates with discussion of research methods and how they can be applicable to the topic.
The participation requirements for the class include careful reading of the suggested articles, as well as submission of three questions to each of them prior to the seminar.
