Not only sight, but also hearing, smell, touch, and taste, play significant roles in how we perceive our world today. But can we access the sensual worlds of the past? This seminar will explore theoretical frameworks and their practical implications for interpreting the material record of past societies . It will start with readings and discussion of theoretical and methodological papers. In the second half of the seminar, students will work on case studies from various fields of the Ancient Studies chosen according to their interests, and will practice their presentation skills. The geographic focus will be Western Asia and Eurasia. Students from neighboring disciplines are encouraged to join.
Students from the Ancient Near Eastern Studies and Archaeology Department of the University of Copenhagen will work parallel on the same topic and visit Berlin in December to present their results in a colloquium at Freie Universität Berlin. At the end of the semester (mid-February), the seminar participants will travel to Copenhagen and present their work in a colloquium there. Students will learn what it takes to prepare a chosen topic for an international seminar/conference within a given time period.
