Minu Haschemi Yekani
Kommentar
This seminar aims to provide a deeper understanding of the history of migration to Germany. It introduces essential approaches for both understanding and studying migration, as well as comprehending its global historical dimensions. We will explore various concepts and topics in migration history, including the German Empire and its aftermath, the First and Second World Wars, Black German history, the different labour migration regimes in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the history of asylum and globalization after 1989. Recurring themes will include gender, racism, citizenship, the question of social and political rights, belonging, anti-racist struggles, and the importance of recognizing diverse histories. One of the seminar's central questions will be: How can we adopt a critical "perspective of migration" to study the history of actors who are often represented through sources and/or narratives created by others?
Students should be motivated to engage in close reading and enjoy discussing and presenting together. This seminar is structured as both a reading and a research seminar.
