Musical and sonic interactions with Cathy Berberian – perspectives of artistic research

What does it mean to conduct artistic research? What methods, approaches, and forms of knowledge are associated with this? What forms of knowledge do I activate when I respond to historical materials with my body and voice rather than with writing a text? What curatorial approaches can we develop and how can they provide critical knowledge in affective but also intellectual ways? The seminar will address these questions using selected archival materials by and about the experimental singer Cathy Berberian, who was one of the leading artists of the New Music scene between 1950 and 1980. Together with the composer Mathias Hinke we will do various exercises to learn and reflect on fundamental questions and techniques of experimental music theater. Students will pursue a project of artistic research related to Cathy Berberian and her performances and reflect on the interplay of cultural, musicological, and artistic perspectives. Ideally, students would also take the seminar Voice, Body, and Memory: Analytical Perspectives on Cathy Berberian in order to become more familiar with Berberian's work. But it is not a requirement.
