Social Histories of Musical Performance

In the last decade, much research in musicology has been devoted to the performance aspects of music, as a way of overcoming the tendencies of a more traditional musicology based mostly on the analysis of scores. What lies beyond the score in musical events, and the different methodologies we can use to study them, are the focus of this seminar. By studying the musicology of record production (N. Cook, R. Beaudoin), the sociology of rehearsals (M. Everist, L. Sikau), the networks of performance practice (M. Iddon and P. Thomas), the anatomies and materialities of performance (E. LeGuin, J. Davies), as well as their medialieties (R. Moseley) this course will help you navigate the most recent literature on music, sound, and performance. Approaching a sociologically informed musicology as a "self-critical musicology" (M. V. Carvalho), we will examine not only the powers and effects of music, but also how musicological discourse operates in mediating and shaping musical practices and narratives. We will combine collective readings and discussions of key texts in the history, sociology, and anthropology of musical performance with written assignments. Schließen
