V-Literatures of Medieval Britain: Reimagining the Classics
Wolfram Keller
Kommentar
According to older versions of literary history, often inspired by Jacob Burckhardt’s model of periodization, it was in the Italian Renaissance that intellectuals and artists truly began to understand classical (Greek and Roman) culture. Implicitly, this means that medieval scholars and writers had—at best—a limited understanding of the classics. This lecture surveys instances of the medieval insular engagement with classical culture (with the material remains of the past, with narratives of Thebes and Troy as well as Alexander) in order to gauge how these texts envision and construct antiquity—or rather: multiple antiquities.
