International comparison of metacoverage

According to Esser and D’Angelo (2003), meta-coverage refers to “news coverage that explicitly addresses the role of media politics in shaping campaign events and outcomes. This includes coverage of the news media itself (its behaviors, products, and roles) and coverage of candidates’ publicity efforts (paid media, communication personnel, and strategic communication).” While originally conceptualized in the context of election campaigns, the concept has since been applied more broadly to media coverage in other domains.
This seminar explores the theoretical foundations and current research on meta-coverage, with a particular emphasis on its implications for reflecting on professional roles, communicative norms, and the societal contributions of different actors in the media sphere. Beyond engaging with key theoretical and empirical works, students will actively participate in a reflection process that considers both the societal level of communication and the individual contributions of professional communicators in shaping public discourse.
Building on this foundation, the seminar will also include a practical component: together, we will develop a research design for a quantitative content analysis that applies the concept of meta-coverage to international reporting on climate change and environmental issues. In this way, students will not only gain a deeper understanding of the concept but also acquire hands-on experience in operationalizing and applying it in a comparative research context.
