Recycling and Waste

Waste pyramide of the FU Berlin

Waste pyramide of the FU Berlin

The waste management policy at Freie Universität Berlin follows the basic principle of resource conservation. Our most important goal is waste avoidance.

We strive to reuse and recycle as much as possible. More than 95 percent of the waste generated is recycled. We also attach great importance to the reduction of plastic and disposable items. The residual waste is incinerated for energy recovery, so that ultimately less than five percent of the University's waste ends up being removed at present. We measure the amount of waste sent to landfill and recycled. When determining where to send the waste, the waste management team takes into consideration the ecological and economic aspects, legal compliance, and convenience of disposal for staff.

Since 2019, The FUndgrube, a second-hand goods exchange, offers a university-wide online platform to give, swap, or share used items in order to avoid waste.

Unit III D of the Engineering and Facilities Department is responsible for the organization and disposal of regularly occurring waste. This mainly involves the standard types of waste such as residual waste, wastepaper and packaging.

The waste management team in the Sustainability & Energy Management Unit takes care of all special and hazardous waste disposal. This includes bulky waste, electronic scrap, metal scrap of all kinds, old files and data carriers, chemical waste, used batteries, toner cartridges, solid manure, and slurry. We follow the legal requirements with a defined process of hazardous waste disposal.
