Cooperation with Universities in Israel and the Palestinian Territories

Freie Universität Berlin currently has student exchange agreements with four universities in Israel:

  • Ben-Gurion University of the Negev
  • The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
  • Tel Aviv University
  • University of Haifa

Freie Universität Berlin also maintains a strategic partnership with Hebrew University in order to carry out joint teaching and research projects in particular. This partnership dates back to an initiative launched by Freie Universität students who reached out to HUJI in the 1950s.

We currently have cooperation agreements for student, staff, and research exchanges with two universities within the framework of Erasmus+:

  • Birzeit University
  • Al-Quds University

Freie Universität Berlin adheres to the European Union’s “Guidelines on the Eligibility of Israeli Entities and Their Activities in the Territories Occupied by Israel since June 1967 for Grants, Prizes and Financial Instruments Funded by the EU from 2014 onwards.”

Freie Universität Berlin does not – and does not wish to – maintain an institutional relationship or initiate cooperation with Ariel University. At the same time, the university does not dictate to its researchers with whom they are allowed to cooperate as individuals. Researchers and other university members are, however, reminded to always observe the Statutes for Safeguarding Good Research Practice.

Freie Universität Berlin supports the DAAD’s Bridge Scholarships for Palestinians in Germany and nominates at-risk students for the Hilde Domin Program. The university also supports at-risk scholars by helping them to apply for relevant grants and linking them up with mentors at Freie Universität Berlin.
