Strategy

The biodiversity crisis calls for action. With the development of a biodiversity strategy, Freie Universität is making the promotion of native urban flora and fauna on its campus a focal point of its sustainability strategy. To this end, it is combining biodiversity as an object of scientific study with nature conservation research and the actual planning and management of its own green spaces and buildings. At the same time, the strategy is intended to facilitate networking and enhance the visibility of activities in research, teaching, and volunteer work that protect biodiversity. Another key building block is the promotion of inter- and transdisciplinary teaching and educational programs.

On May 22, 2024 - International Day for Biological Diversity - Freie Universität Berlin was the first German university to present its new biodiversity strategy. The strategy focuses on the promotion of biodiversity of fauna, flora and microorganisms as well as the protection of ecosystem functions and processes.
