All persons who do not come from EU or EFTA states (Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland) must apply for a residence permit as soon as possible or at least 8 weeks before the expiry of their visa or the 90 days (in the case of visa-free entry: Australia, Canada, USA, United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Brazil) at the Landesamt für Einwanderung (LEA), Keplerstraße 2, 10589 Berlin, U Mierendorffplatz.

A personal visit to the Immigration Office is absolutely necessary.

A fingerprint must be submitted and the processing fee paid at the appointment. The processing time for applications is between 10 and 16 weeks. The fee charged by the Immigration Office is approximately € 100 per application.

Under the following link https://www.berlin.de/einwanderung/en/services/appointments/ you can find out how to get an appointment at the Berlin Immigration Office (LEA). On the following website of the LEA you will find more detailed information about the documents that are required for the application: https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/305244/en/

The FU Pass-Service supports students and researchers at Freie Universität Berlin who need a residence permit. We are glad to answer your questions about applying for a residence permit.

The FU Pass-Service checks the application documents for completeness and submits the applications directly to the Immigration Office via an online procedure, but each applicant is still required to visit the Immigration Office in person after that.

Please note that we can only provide this service for residence permits for temporary stays.

We ask for your understanding that we can only offer this service to students and researchers enrolled at Freie Universität Berlin or academics employed at our university. In addition, a registered residential address in Berlin is a prerequisite for submitting the documents to the Berlin Immigration Office (LEA).

Please make sure to read the information on the fact sheet before contacting us.

Zoltán Juhász and Alexandra Belevich-Obolenskaya (assistance) will be happy to advise you on our services and can be contacted at pass-service@fu-berlin.de.

You can find more information about the Welcome Service for visiting scholars and scientists here.

You are also welcome to use our service if you have successfully completed your studies at Freie Universität Berlin and would like to apply for a residence permit for job-seeking qualified workers.
